1. Duke Possibly the most loved and despised team in college basketball, Duke has continually been the team to beat. In fact, Duke, under the coaching of Mike Krzyzewski, has been a number one seed for eight of the last ten years of the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils’ tournament record over the past decade consists of one national championship (2001), three Final Four appearances, and 28 tournament wins.
2. Michigan State Even though Michigan State may not have the kind of reputation Duke does, the Spartans have made several impressive tournament appearances over the past decade. From 1999 to 2001, Michigan State made three straight Final Four appearances and was the tournament champion in 2000.
3. University of Connecticut UConn is one of two teams on the list that has won more than one tournament championship in the past ten years. The Huskies won in 1999 and in 2004. In addition to winning two championships, UConn has also earned an impressive 25 tournament wins and has a reputation for producing players that go on to have successful NBA careers.
4. Florida Earlier in the decade, Florida had a reputation for being a team that had a good record but struggled in the NCAA tournament. However, Florida now boasts two consecutive championship titles (2006 and 2007). In addition to the Gators’ championship wins, Florida has made 3 Final Four appearances and earned 22 tournament wins.
5. Kansas Although the Jayhawks have not won a national title in the past decade, Kansas still has an impressive record. Kansas has the second best Ratings Percentage Index in the country. Over the past decade, the Jayhawks have made two Final Four appearances and won 20 tournament games.
6. North Carolina North Carolina, under the coaching of Roy Williams, has also made strong tournament appearances. The Tar Heels won the NCAA Tournament in 2005. In a span of ten years, North Carolina has made three trips to the Final Four and has won 20 tournament games.
7. Kentucky Some may be shocked to find Kentucky listed due to the team’s tournament struggles in recent years; however, such people must remember the powerhouses the Wildcats were in the earlier half of the decade being examined. Kentucky won the title in 1998 and was a dominating program a few years prior to winning in 1998. The Wildcats also have 17 NCAA Tournament wins.
8. Arizona Arizona, like Kansas, was placed on the list without winning a national title during the current decade; however, Arizona did win the title in 1997. Over the past decade, the Cats have produced three Final Four appearances, won 17 tournament games, and have been a number one seed three times.
9. Maryland Maryland, which is in the same conference as Duke and North Carolina, is often overshadowed. Still, the Terps were the 2002 NCAA Tournament champions. Additionally, Maryland has made two Final Four appearances and has won 19 tournament games.
10. Syracuse While Syracuse did win the 2003 NCAA Tournament, the Orange have struggled in tournament play. After winning the tournament, Syracuse went on to win a mere seven tournament games.
