“The Box” is the latest movie by the same filmmakers that made “Donnie Darko.” So, with that in mind, you have to expect a movie that is down-right trippy. However, after leaving the theatre, I still have no idea what the heck just happened (not necessarily in a bad way). This is definitely a movie meant to keep people guessing- and returning to the theatres to figure it out.
“The Box” centers around Norma and Arthur Lewis (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden), a married couple with a young son. The film opens with stories of the couples’ financial problems. Out of the blue their doorbell rings and there stands a facially disfigured Arlington Steward (Frank Langella), holding a box with a button on top. He explains to them that if they press the button they will be given $1 million in cash, tax free, but if they push it someone they don’t know will die. This taps into the moral question of what you would do if presented with such an offer.
I can’t say that I liked the movie but I walked away with my mind completely spinning. It’s hard to even describe the plot of this movie when I’m not sure the director even knows what he was doing. It is a sci-fi thriller and is worth seeing just to try and figure out what everything means. I hated it and I loved it and I would recommend seeing it.
