If you’re in need of a good movie to watch after stuffing yourself full of turkey and mashed potatoes, then “Star Trek” is the movie to watch. The DVD was released Nov. 17 and is full of all kinds of fun extras. The film is already my favorite movie of the year (with “Zombieland” a close second) and is a movie anyone can enjoy, even if they are not a previous “Star Trek” fans.
This is “Star Trek” as you’ve never seen it before—youthful, fast-paced, thrilling, funny and fueled by an adventurous spirit. The movie opens aboard the USS Kelvin, where George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) serves and his wife Winona (Jennifer Morrison) waits to give birth. The Kelvin is blindsided, left crippled and captainless by a massive ship emerging from a black hole; in order to buy time for the crew to escape, Kirk assumes control and pilots the ship singlehandedly. His sacrifice saves 800 lives, including those of his wife and son.
The story then cuts to a sweet scene, set to a Beastie Boys song, of a 12-year-old Kirk going on a joy ride after stealing his stepfather’s car. We then see a grown up Kirk, sitting in a small Iowa bar trying his charm on some local star fleet cadets. Chris Pine plays Kirk down to a tee as a heavy-drinking, skirt-chasing, hothead charmer who is always quick to make a witty joke.
“Star Trek” has plenty of other great characters that add to the humor and make this a great movie. There are excellent performances from Simon Pegg (Scottie), Erik Bana (Nero), John Cho (Sulu) and my favorite of all, Anton Yelchin (the great Pavel Chekov). The plot is full of twists and is supported by some spectacular actions scenes that leave you on the edge of your seat from the opening sequence. If you want a film that is full of action, humor and some great acting, pick it up on DVD.
