Every year around April Fool's day, The Reveille writers create their most outrageous, absurd and hilarious issue of the semester. Last year's April Fool's issue was not one to be missed.
It contained stories about a new Yachting team at Nebraska Wesleyan University, edible utensils and plates in the cafeteria, and many other entertaining pieces.
Perhaps the most ridiculous story featured in the issue was a little story about "teen sensation" Miley Cyrus and her interest in attending NWU.
This particular fictitious story made its rounds on the Internet and even made its way to the ears of prospective NWU students. Yes, quite a few individuals believed this rumor.
The issue with the story, however, cannot be solely blamed on gullibility. In the defense of those who truly believed the article – it was taken out of context.
Most who were fooled by this story read it on The Reveille's Web site – not in the actual paper. The Web site (until recently) did not inform readers that the article was included in the April Fool's issue and, thus, controversy was born.
Along with the controversy comes the seemingly obligatory criticism about such an article. The Reveille's site allows readers to leave comments on each story.
To date, the Miley Cyrus article is the most popular on the website and, with over ten comments, the most commented article. Some comments point out the possibility of the article being a prank, other comments submitted demonstrated lack of consideration for the art of humor, some lack courtesy toward the article's author and some showed clearly that the reader may have been upset about being fooled and decided to leave comments that reflected it.
