For the many students attending Sex Signals on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 16, one thing is clear: she's just not that into you, or is she?
The improv group started with acting out the stereotypes of men and women and then discrediting them.
We learned that the signals girls send and the signals guys get are often not the same. The dynamic duo showed us several scenarios as to how one's next date could play out. The horrible pick-up line, the uncomfortable approach and that creepy guy that just won't go away were all featured in the ad-lib show.
Polar bears and penguins even made their way into the sketch, though in an odd and almost disturbing manner. After several laughs, the sketch took a sudden serious turn.
A "talk show" was set up and "Jake" was put on trial (kind of).The audience became the judge. Was Jake guilty of raping his accuser? We all heard his side of the scenario and were allowed to ask questions. Undoubtedly the situation was not cut and dry, but in the end the audience came to the conclusion that it was, in fact, not consensual.
Following this, the duo talked about what is and is not rape. They even touched on the difference between regret and rape.
In the end, they encouraged the audience to help prevent rape by doing two very simple things. First, listen. If someone confesses to you that they have been raped, encourage them to report it and/or get help or even counseling. Second, ask. Prevent yourself from being put in Jake's position by simply asking for consent. The audience admitted that the question is awkward, but by simply asking it, hundreds of people will not have to experience the horrible consequences of rape.
