Relay for Life is raising money for its annual event, to be held April 9-10, 2010, by holding a competition between classes (First-Year through Senior) to see who can donate the most money.
Money raised by the event will go toward causes such as cancer research, advocacy programs, educational tools and other programs dedicated to fighting cancer. These Penny Races started on Monday, Oct. 26 and will remain ongoing until Relay in April.
A bucket designated for each class’s donations is located in Smith-Curtis.
Nebraska Wesleyan University Relay for Life ’09 celebrated its 25th anniversary with the overall fundraising goal being $25,000. NWU managed an astounding $36,000. Clearly, the bar has been set, and NWU must rise to meet and hopefully outdo its last record.
Senior Miles Powers, who works for the American Cancer Society, said, “When I first got involved, I was looking to get involved with a nonprofit organization, but then I found out that the organization is really well run and needed. The coolest thing about it is I can have a part in minimizing the number of people that hear those three words that nobody wants to hear: ‘you have cancer.’”
The overall fundraising goal this year is $40,000, which, according to Powers, is an attainable goal due to last year’s figures.
Obviously, the Penny Wars are expected to be a big draw this year, as the money is going to a very good cause. More and more money is being raised every day. With help from NWU, Relay for Life can achieve its goal. Though NWU has never held the Penny Races, the organization looks to be on its way to a good number again as buckets are filling by the day.
Students can also help raise money for Relay For Life by eating at Raising Canes on the first Wednesday of each month, as $1 per meal (for members of the NWU community) will go to Relay For Life.
