Junior pitcher Alysia Wittmaack threw an unprecedented no-hitter against conference rival Midland Lutheran on April 13. The amazing part of it is that she didn't even allow a walk while striking out 11 in the complete game victory. Midland's first batter of the game reached base on an error, denying Wittmaack of an even bigger feat, a perfect game.
"I wasn't even aware that it was a no-hitter until Junior first baseman Marcia Kennedy came up to me after the game and said ‘You just threw a perfect game!' But it wasn't a perfect game since the first batter of the game got on base. That's when I realized that she was the only girl to get on base all game." Wittmaack said.
The feat was Wittmaack's first collegiate no-hitter as a Prairie Wolf. She is one of the most dominant pitchers in the GPAC as she has a staggering .88 ERA and a 7-0 record on the mound in conference play.
"It felt great to throw a no-hitter, especially since we were playing such a tough conference team. I definitely have my defense to thank for this one."
The Prairie Wolves have hit their stride as they have won 10 of their last 11 games. They are currently leading the GPAC standings with a 10-2 record and are 19-7 overall. They are looking to win their first conference championship since 1986.
"I think our team is so successful this year because we have a lot of depth. Every position has two, three, and sometimes even four players who can get the job done in that spot. I think a big reason for our success is our freshman class. We have a lot of young women coming in as freshmen and competing at a high-level" Wittmaack said.
