Nebraska Wesleyan University overcame an incredibly slow start and a four-point halftime deficit to rally for a 59-56 victory over Dana College in Great Plains Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday night (Jan. 27) in Blair, Neb.
The win for the Prairie Wolves was their second straight GPAC win, marking the first time since the 2005-06 season that a NWU women's basketball team has won back-to-back games in conference play.
NWU improves to 7-11 overall and 4-7 in GPAC play to sit in 10th place in the league standings. With seven remaining games, the seven wins is the second highest win total for NWI since the 2002-03 season.
The game was tied with 40 seconds to play before Shea Rasmussen went to the free throw line for NWU with 16 seconds left. Rasmussen hit the first free throw and missed the second, but Mallory Shanahan got the offensive putback to put NWU up by three. Dana would hit a basket to pull within one, but Sadie Struebing sealed the win for NWU by going 2-2 at the free throw line.
NWU had to overcome an early 14-point deficit in the first half as the Prairie Wolves scored just three points in the first 10 minutes and trailed 17-3 with just over 10 minutes to play. They would go on a 21-9 run to close the half down to within only four points.
Rasmussen again led NWU in scoring with 18 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Struebing recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Mallory Shanahan chipped in 10 points for the Prairie Wolves.
NWU will be back at home on Saturday afternoon to host Briar Cliff University at 2 p.m.
