On November 14 and 15, the Opera Workshop class showcased the work their accomplishments this semester with a performance entitled "Wild About Mozart" in O'Donnell Auditorium. Students in the class studied and performed several scenes from various operas written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. They also performed scenes from more contemporary composers, such as Kurt Weil and Carlisle Floyd.
Directed by Dr. Dawn Krogh, the students of Opera Workshop have the chance to intensify their study of opera technique and performance every fall semester.
Sophomore Laynee Woodward, a member of the class, is thankful for the opportunity: "I love that at Wesleyan we have the opportunity as freshmen and sophomores to be involved in opera scenes and figure out if that's what we want to do with our lives. You don't get that at bigger schools.
Senior Deanna Floe has similar praise for the program: "It's a nice performance opportunity for people who aren't able to be in the opera in the spring, and it's always fun to get dressed up and wear great costumes!" Woodward and Floe echo sentiments that were expressed to the audience during the performance. The experience is something students are grateful for, both for the glimpse into professional life as a singer and the exciting, fun atmosphere.
The level of expertise with which the students performed made for an engaging concert. Host Donald Burt included humorous commentary in between scenes, as well as brief descriptions of each opera and the events that led up to each specific scene.
Lynn Schlater augmented the vocal performance with her skills as an accompanist. The talent expressed in "Wild About Mozart" is reflective of Wesleyan's vocal music department.
